Naxos is at the heart of the Cyclades ferry system with frequent daily connections to / from Athens and many of the Islands. Various shipping lines operate ferries from Pireaus and also the lesser known Rafina with travel time between 5 – 8 hrs, in addition there is also high speed catamarans which cut the sailing time by half but can cost upto twice as much.

Naxos is connected to the mainland and rest of the Islands by ferry boats, high speed and flying cats running on regular scheduled timetables. During the summer season several ferries depart Pireaus early morning with the afternoon ferries leaving 16.30 – 17.30, there is also evening ferries departing around 20.00. The Blue star range – Blue Star Naxos, Blue Star Paros & Blur Star Ithaca are modern ships and are generally faster than the conventional ferries but these do get busy especially during August & July. As with all ferries for these months it is always advisable to book the tickets in advance to ensure you are not disappointed. First sailings of the high speed catamaran also depart early morning.

Rafina as an high speed link to Naxos which takes around 4 hrs, Rafina is closer to the airport and is far more relaxed than the hustle of Pireaus.

As well as the daily service to / from Athens, Naxos enjoys multiple connections to the Islands in all directions. Paros its near neighbor, visible from the coastline has many connections on a daily basis with ferries often arriving at the same time. In addition to Paros there is a number of daily links to Santorini (3hrs), Mykonos (3 hrs), Ios (1.25hrs), Sikinos (3hrs), Tinos (4hrs). The minor islands of the Cyclades are served daily – Schinoussa (1.75hrs), Folegandros (3hrs), Donoussa (1hr), Koufonissi (2.5hrs), Iraklia (1.25hrs)

The Dodecanese of Rhodes (10hrs), Kos (15hrs), Skiathos (8.5hrs) in the Sporades and Thessaloniki (15hrs) have less frequent connections during the week.

You can purchase tickets from many of the ticket agencies in town and around the port, the price remains the same from whichever agency you purchase from so don’t be afraid of getting charged over the top prices. Be sure to arrive at the port at least 20 mins before departure.

There is several different classes of seats on the ferries along with available cabins If required, its also possible to catch a few sun rays as you sail the seas if you can tolerate the strong breeze ! The ferries offer several cafes, eateries, “Goody” burger bars and can be quite comfortable if you can manage to arrive early and get the correct seats. On boarding your tickets will be checked before climbing the escalators to the passenger floors, any luggage can be taken with you but can be cumbersome and inconvenient or otherwise left in the luggage area just inside the garage section.

Don’t foget that the Greek ferry timetables can easily change so always double check your times nearer the time.

When returning to Pireaus its always advisable to ensure you allow plenty of time or possibly a day to travel back to airport as its not uncommon for ferries to be cancelled during summer due to high winds.
